HISTORY OF APEX CLUB OF PENANG

The club was formed with initiatives taken by the Apex Club of Ipoh, which resulted in its inauguration in May 1971 with a whopping 36 members.Charter night was held on Saturday 16 September 1972 at the historical E&O Hotel with K.Kumarendran as the Charter President. The club was then identified as Club No.659 of District 5,Zone 4 of the Association of Apex Clubs of Australia. Some of the more prominent pioneers who, upon retirement, were made Life Members include Lim Chin Chye,Andrew Ong,Seah Kiok Lian,Stephen Chinniah and the late Yeoh Chin Lee.Life Member Seah Kiok Lian has the distinction of being the Association's first Supply House Coordinator.Apexian Seow Chye Hiap was elected the 2nd National President of Apex Clubs of Malysian in 1976/77, followed by Apexian Mohammad Abdullah in 1982/83 and Apexian Edward Mai 1998/1999.

Penang Club to their credit managed to expand to two areas. In 1977,with the assistance of Kuala Lumpur Club, the Sungai Petani Club in Kedah was inaugurated. On its own the club was able to set up the Apex Club of Betterworth.

Penang Club is the only Apex Club to have founded a woman's wing, then known as the Apex Club of Penang.Subsequently when amendments resulted in ladies being invited into Apex, the Apex club folded and several of its members joined the Apex Club of Penang.

Penang Club happens to be the first club in Malaysia to have elected a lady member to lead the club. This honour went to Apexian Jane Chan who became the club president in 1998.
The club also has a permanent clubhouse at Kompleks Masyarakat Penyayang,(CO-4 UP,Jalan Utama,10460 Penang,Malaysia)which serves not only as meeting venue but also doubles as a store for club materials.
