- Malaysian and Singaporean cyclists to ride 850KM in Aid Of Education
The inaugural event Apex 850 kicks off in January when twenty cyclists from Malaysia and Singapore will ride 850 kilometres from Penang to Singapore, to provide opportunities for deserving under-graduates.
The 850km endurance charity ride will span four days (22nd – 25th January 2013), starting in Penang near the city’s iconic bridge, and ending in Singapore at the Apex Harmony Lodge, the country’s first purpose built home for people with dementia.
From Penang the cyclists will ride south to Teluk Intan, followed by Port Dickson, Batu Pahat, and then into Singapore via the Woodlands checkpoint.
The Malaysian cyclists are aiming to raise RM150,000 while the Singaporeans are targeting SGD200,000 for their Apex Harmony Lodge.
Apex Penang Education Fund
Launched in 2011, Apex Penang Educational Fund provides financial assistance to deserving tertiary-level students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Applicants must be Malaysian citizen who study in the universities or other institutions of higher learning in Malaysia.
The fund depends on private donations and fundraising events like the previous Mount Kinabalu Climbathon which was held on 14th February 2011. With the assistance of 5 Youth climbers; 3 locals and 2 Australians, Apex Club of Penang raised RM50,000 to kick start this Fund. That scaling the highest peak in South-east Asia also brought pride to the Apex Fraternity as the flags, of Apex Club of Penang and corporate sponsors, were hoisted for the first time at that majestic height of 13,455 feet above sea level. Apex 850 is to raise more money to assist more students.
Apex Harmony Lodge
Apex Harmony Lodge believes that people with dementia should experience a quality of life that is no different from any other person’s. It is a purpose-built 210-bed home in Pasir Ris, Singapore. The Lodge has provided quality, affordable dementia care since 1999. Besides medical subvention funding from the government, the lodge relies on private donations and fundraising activities to sustain its day-to-day operations. Residents have access to medical and physical therapy, and the lodge supports their families with psychiatric and social care. The lodge also works with schools, private organizations and volunteers to raise awareness about dementia.
