MINUTES OF THE 881th MEETING OF APEX CLUB OF PENANG
HELD ON 03/11/10, 8PM AT JADE PALACE RESTAURANT, PENANG

1.0 Confirmation of Minutes
1.1 The 880th Minutes held on 20/10/10 was proposed for adoption by Balan Menon
and seconded by Andrew Ong.
2.0 Coming Mid-Term to be hosted by Apex Pg / 40th Anniversary landmark.
2.1 Edward will finalize the new venue soon. Victor cautioned that time is short.
2.2 Members wanted the appeal letters & the rates (for advertisers in souvenir
programme) to be ready asap.
2.3 Victor suggested adopting a site at the Speakers’ Corner, The Esplanade, for
our 40th Anniversary landmark. He shall contact the relevant authorities.
2.4 Edward proposed that Apex Pg sponsors 2 Indonesian Apexians to attend. He
can home host them. Apex Pg to bear the flight cost ex-Bali & Mid-Term fees.
He requested Mike Ong to inform Kate Huth accordingly. He will further
sponsor 7 Apexians from The Philippines.
3.0 Apex Pg ‘Bursary Fund’
3.1 Victor said that his appeal for RM4,000 donations is under consideration by his
Company. He further reported that the buyer, who trusted him, had to incur
substantial repair cost on the Puegeot car. Members agreed to lower the selling
price to RM3,500 from RM5,000 to off-set the repair cost.
3.2 The Charity Treasure Hunt is in April 2011. A mini-hunt on trishaw within the
Heritage Trail will be included to make it more exciting. The Hunt is targeted
to raise RM50,000, as earlier proposed by Prospexian Lee.
3.3 Angie Low will follow up with the Student Affairs Officer of Pg TAR College.
3.4 Members agreed to name the Fund: Apex Pg Education Fund.
4.0 Adoption of inmates at Cheshire Home Foster Parents’ Day on 6/11/2010
4.1 With Prospexian Lee’s contribution, Apex Pg’s donation is now RM2,160.
5.0 Other Directors’ Reports
5.1 Edward will sponsor 2 Youth Apexians from Apex Pg, below 40 years old, to the
Philippines Convention in May 2011. He also encouraged members to apply
for the Founders’ Travel Fund to Australia.
5.2 Apex Pg will co-organize a trip from 2nd to 6th Dec 2010 to Malacca for inmates
of Job-Link. Edward will liaise with Malacca Central to host a dinner for them.
5.3 A project to plant Penang Apex flag on Mt Kinabalu is being planned by Edward.
6.0 Other Matters
6.1 Fines Collection : RM 17.20 is with Angie Low.

In case you didn't already know this little bit of trivia, it might make you chuckle when you read it.
ON JULY 20, 1969, AS COMMANDER OF THE APOLLO 11 LUNAR MODULE, NEIL ARMSTRONG WAS
THE FIRST PERSON TO SET FOOT ON THE MOON.
HIS FIRST WORDS AFTER STEPPING ON THE MOON, 'THAT'S ONE SMALL STEP FOR MAN, ONE
GIANT LEAP FOR MANKIND,' WERE TELEVISED TO EARTH AND HEARD BY MILLIONS.*
BUT JUST BEFORE HE REENTERED THE LANDER, HE MADE THE ENIGMATIC REMARK "GOOD LUCK, MR. GORSKY".
MANY PEOPLE AT NASA THOUGH IT WAS A CASUAL REMARK CONCERNING SOME RIVAL SOVIET COSMONAUT.
HOWEVER, UPON CHECKING, THERE WAS NO GORSKY IN EITHER THE RUSSIAN OR AMERICAN SPACE PROGRAMS.
OVER THE YEARS MANY PEOPLE QUESTIONED ARMSTRONG AS TO WHAT THE 'GOOD LUCK, MR. GORSKY
STATEMENT MEANT, BUT ARMSTRONG ALWAYS JUST SMILED.
ON JULY 5, 1995, IN TAMPA BAY , FLORIDA , WHILE ANSWERING QUESTIONS FOLLOWING A SPEECH,
A REPORTER BROUGHT UP THE 26- YEAR-OLD QUESTION TO ARMSTRONG. THIS TIME HE FINALLY
RESPONDED.
MR. GORSKY HAD DIED, SO NEIL ARMSTRONG FELT HE COULD NOW ANSWER THE QUESTION.
IN 1938, WHEN HE WAS A KID IN A SMALL MID-WEST TOWN, HE WAS PLAYING BASEBALL WITH A FRIEND
IN THE BACKYARD. HIS FRIEND HIT THE BALL, WHICH LANDED IN HIS NEIGHBOR'S YARD BY THEIR
BEDROOM WINDOW.

One of the main arguments is that we need to drastically increase the amount of money we're saving. On average, we should save about one-third of our income in our twenties, thirties, and forties for retirement, emergency funds, and big goals such as purchasing a home. I've gotten a lot of questions about that--how is it even possible? What did you give up to do that? Are you doing that right now? I wanted to share some of the ways I saved that much and explain why I think it's necessary.
First, a confession: I am not currently saving one-third of my income. That's because I've experienced two major financial shocks in the last year, having a baby and buying a house. Between mortgage payments and daycare expenses, I've fallen way behind, but I plan to return to my previous saving levels as soon as those costs become more manageable.
For most of my twenties, though, I was saving one-third of my income. About twenty percent went directly into my retirement accounts, so I never even saw the money. I put an additional 15 percent into after-tax savings accounts, which was mostly invested in money market funds.
Here are some of my strategies that made it possible:
Live like a college student long after graduation: My husband and I continued living in a small apartment with our old futon as a sofa for five years after graduation. At first, we didn't use cable and stuck with an old tube television. For awhile, we even figured out a way to make room for our baby in that small space.
Become a frugal chef. I didn't know much about cooking before I got married, but I quickly learned how to make vegetable-focused meals from the Food Network. Using small amounts of meat saved us money, as did limiting our restaurant meals.
Stick with one car. We've always chosen to live near public transportation so we can limit ourselves to one car, which saves us thousands of dollars a year. Between gas, upkeep, and insurance, cars are expensive, so sticking to one can make a big difference. (These first three items--housing, food, and transportation--take up about two-thirds of most people's incomes, so focusing on that pricey trifecta can have a big impact.)
Use old cell phones. We never joined the smartphone craze, so while we might not look as cool with our bulky old-style phones, we're saving a lot by avoiding pricey data plans and high-tech gadgets.
Splurge on small but meaningful indulgences. When I bought my husband a LCD television for his birthday one year (to replace the old tube set we had), I knew it was a huge splurge, and certainly not a necessary one. But given all of our other sacrifices, I figured it was worth it, and given how much he likes it, I think it was. We also buy high-quality beer to drink at home. Even though a $9 six-pack is no deal, it's much cheaper than drinking at a bar.
Everyone's strategies will be different, since they're based on your own preferences. You might bring a bagged lunch every day but go on an international vacation every year, or indulge in restaurant meals while collecting coupons for the grocery store. As long as you're cutting back on the areas that aren't that important to you, you won't feel like you're making an impossible sacrifice.
Almost everyone can save a significant chunk of income, regardless of income level or where you live. You just have to live a lifestyle that's a lot more frugal than the one you could actually afford. Sure, you might occasionally wish you had a fancier television, or furniture, but purchasing those items give such short-term bursts of pleasure that the cost is hardly worth it. Instead, invest in your relationships, hobbies, and career, all of which can outlast even the most expensive television.
